This month we’re shining the spotlight on our specialty grade, single origin Peru Organic coffee. In this post we’ll take a look at how organic coffee is grown and farmed, the increase in popularity of organic coffee as well as explore our Peru Organic in more detail.

What is Organic Coffee?

Simply put, organic coffee is coffee that has been grown and processed without the use of synthetic pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers or any other manufactured chemical. Coffee that has been farmed organically leaves a reduced impact on the surrounding environment compared to traditional farming methods.

It is a common misconception that organic coffee cannot be treated by any pesticides, however there are many natural pesticides that farmers can use on their crops and still be considered organic.

The Rise of Organic Coffee

The demand amongst Australian consumers for organic coffee beans and other organic food products has skyrocketed in recent years. According to the 2014 Australian Organic Market Report, demand for organic products outstripped supply by 40%, whilst sales of organically grown coffee increased by 15%.

The reason for this increase in growth and demand can be attributed to Australians becoming more conscious of the impact that their food has on their body. Organic products are generally perceived to be healthier for people to consume due to the absence of additives, hormones and synthetic pesticides.

Our Peru Organic Coffee

Our single origin organic coffee from Peru was awarded Bronze at the 2016 Golden Bean Coffee Roasters Competition in the single origin espresso category. This coffee is produced by Perhusa, the leading Peruvian coffee exporter. In a direct or indirect way, Perhusa provides work and income to approximately 35,000 families.

Peru is well known for growing and producing high quality organic coffee. There are three main coffee growing regions in Peru on the eastern slope of the Andes mountains: Chanchamayo in the central highlands, and Amazonas and San Martín, in the northern highlands. Most coffee from Peru is shade grown and crops are largely hand-picked.

Our Peru Organic coffee has a well-balanced profile. It features a deep chocolate aroma, earthy and sweet flavours with mild citrus notes, a soft mellow body and a refreshing, clean aftertaste. This versatile roast suits a range of brewing methods, including espresso and filter.

This award winning coffee is not only available as beans, but also in our recently released biodegradable coffee capsule.

This capsule is made from 100% plant based and biodegradable material and is also Nespresso® compatible. Unlike most aluminium and plastic capsules, this capsule will biodegrade in normal landfill within 180 days. Our biodegradable coffee capsule is a great alternative for coffee lovers who enjoy the convenience of traditional capsules and are also want to reduce their carbon footprint.
