The whole team at Di Bella Coffee is celebrating after being crowned Overall Champions at this year’s Compak Golden Bean Roaster Competition and Conference, better known as the Golden Bean competition. Join us in our celebrations and discover the award winning coffees in our coffee range.

Our expert coffee and roasting crew consisting of Phillip Di Bella, Michael Anapo, Mina Ali, Raihaan Esat and Hadi Ashnaei headed to Port Macquarie last week for the start of the conference and judging rounds.

From Wednesday the 16th until Friday the 18th, the team joined industry experts from around the country to judge over 1000 different coffees in order to determine the best of the best.

About The Golden Bean Competition

The Golden Bean is the world’s largest coffee roaster competition and conference. This competition endeavours to find Australia’s best coffee roasting business with coffees being judged as espresso, milk and filter beverages with medals awarded in a number of award categories.

The conference attracts attendance from over 100 coffee roasting businesses and consists of a number of educational workshops and social functions.

Coffee entered into the competition is judged by our peers in the industry. All coffees are tasted blind, making it a very fair competition in which the best coffees wins.

Coffee is judged on both the cup quality in terms of flavour as well as the coffee roasting techniques of the roaster.

Di Bella Coffee is very proud to have won over 40 medals across every category since we first started entering the competition in 2007, including winning Overall Champion in 2009

This year, Di Bella Coffee submitted over 50 entries across every category including Espresso, Milk Based and Organic.

To prepare for entering the competition, our roasting team spent countless hours analysing past results in order to identify the best strategy for blend selections. They also worked on fine tuning roasting parameters to subtle degrees to achieve the very best cup profiles.

Di Bella Coffee also submitted a very special custom blend called STOMP’D ON! which was created specifically for submitting in the competition. This blend is up of two very distinctive origins and was roasted in an innovative way in order to preserve more sugars and acidity compared to traditional roasting methods. STOMP’D ON! was created to really “Wow” the judges with something totally unique and memorable and to show them what Di Bella Coffee is capable of.

Why Do We Enter The Golden Bean?

Di Bella Coffee has been entering the Golden Bean competition since 2007 not just to demonstrate our dedication to roasting specialty grade coffee, but to showcase the work of the coffee farms we partner with through our Crop to Cup program. Through our relationships with coffee farmers all around the world, we are proud to be able to source the exceptional coffee beans we roast here in Australia for our customers.


After many hours of judging and attending seminars on the Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, the team eagerly awaited the Awards Dinner on the night of Saturday the 19th.

We are especially proud to have been awarded medals for coffee we contract roast for some of our largest customers, including Brunetti, Café 63 and Wray Organic.
